16 Miles
When a small-town urgent care centre shuts down, residents face a new reality where distance becomes a matter of life and death.

On one of the worst winter nights on record, I watched someone I care deeply about survive a cardiac arrest in the back of an ambulance, somewhere on the highway between Fort Erie and Niagara Falls. 16 Miles that felt, in that moment, like an impossible distance.
He survived. Not everyone does.
When I learned that Douglas Memorial's urgent care centre was scheduled for permanent closure... that this distance would soon become the only option for every Fort Erie resident in crisis... I knew this was a story that needed to be told. Not as a polemic, but as a record. Of what a community stands to lose. Of who bears the cost of decisions made far from the consequences.
16 Miles is that record.
